Liquid Telecom and GlobalReach partner to deliver high-performance managed Wi-Fi services across Africa

New technology will enable Liquid Telecom to offer enhanced Wi-Fi services to businesses and bring benefits to consumers in the region

Liquid Telecom is now helping African businesses deploy and manage world-class Wi-Fi for their customers, through a new partnership with GlobalReach Technology.

Liquid Telecom’s managed Wi-Fi services are available to businesses that want enterprise-grade Wi-Fi without the worries of procuring and managing a wireless LAN service.

The GlobalReach service enables businesses offering Wi-Fi to their guests to connect and engage with these customers through a branded guest Wi-Fi experience and tap into new branding and advertising opportunities. It also offers comprehensive analytics on user demographics and engagement, enabling businesses to better understand their customers and tailor service to customer needs and behaviours.

“The partnership with GlobalReach brings the power and scale of a global Wi-Fi enabler into Liquid’s core network and data centres, allowing our customers to benefit from the latest Wi-Fi technology deployed in-country,” said David Behr, Chief Product Officer at Liquid Telecom.

The service combines connectivity from Liquid Telecom with hardware from Ruckus Wireless and a cloud-based platform from GlobalReach, which provides authentication, authorisation and accounting (AAA) and customisable captive portals. It enables the smallest cafes to the largest shopping malls and hotels to offer Wi-Fi securely to their customers without having to incur large up front installation costs.

“Wi-Fi that works for both staff and visitors is critical in the corporate environment, while reliable free Wi-Fi is also becoming an expectation of visitors and customers to many venues. Insights into customer behaviour leads to an enhanced customer experience, driving additional sales and enabling new revenue streams through proximity marketing, which in turn pays for the Wi-Fi service,” commented Ellie Hagopian, Head of Wi-Fi Strategy at Liquid Telecom.”

Liquid Telecom’s managed Wi-Fi is available for a fixed monthly fee and will be available in 8 countries across the region.

– The number of public Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide is projected to increase from 64 million in 2015 to 432 million by 2020, according to the latest Cisco Visual Networking Index.

– Liquid Telecom’s existing managed Wi-Fi customers, along with Liquid Telecom’s public Wi-Fi networks, will be migrated to the new platform powered by GlobalReach Technology over the coming months.

– The secure, scalable GlobalReach Technology platform delivers billions of sessions every year. It supports some of the largest and most advanced community, large enterprise and SMB Wi-Fi services, including LinkNYC in New York, London Underground with Virgin Media and XLN Business’ UK SMB Wi-Fi service.

– Liquid Telecom collected the ‘Best Wi-Fi Deployment to Connect the Unconnected in Rural Environment’ award at the World Wi-Fi Day Awards earlier this year for its free Wi-Fi project in Nakuru County, Kenya.

– Managed Wi-Fi has emerged as a compelling solution for governments and municipalities to offer free Wi-Fi to citizens in a reliable, cost-effective manner, and use that platform to deliver e-government services.

GlobalReach is First Wi-Fi Online Signup Service with inBuilt Hotspot 2.0 Release 2 Support for Windows 10

Only OSU to Support Wi-Fi Onboarding for all Operating Systems

November 16, 2016 – WBA Wireless Congress, San Jose: The GlobalReach Passpoint Hotspot 2.0 online signup service (OSU), is now the first commercial provisioning software with inbuilt Hotspot 2.0 Release 2 support for Windows 10, said the Wi-Fi AAA and captive portal software platform company today. The updated GlobalReach OSU will be available to wireless service providers from December 1.

The news comes as number of ‘active devices’ running Windows 10 hit 400 million across 192 countries, and is on target to reach one billion users within three years.

Today’s announcement continues GlobalReach Technology’s commitment to be the only Hotspot 2.0 OSU to support all major operating systems. It follows the 2015 integration of Windows 10 Release 1 and Google’s Android ‘M’ operating systems.

The Hotspot 2.0 OSU is a built-in feature of the GlobalReach AAA RADIUS and captive portal platform. The software allows service providers and enterprises to easily onboard all devices to secure Passpoint™ Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi services, ending manual Wi-Fi logins and other obstacles to fast, seamless, secure connection. The OSU easily creates Passpoint user profiles allowing automatic connection to any Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi network.

The OSU was used to support the recent WBA City Wi-Fi Roaming Project, and is also used by some of the largest city Wi-Fi networks including LinkNYC, San Francisco and San Jose.

Today’s announcement also further supports the WBA’s vision for widespread seamless Wi-Fi access. Its Hotspot 2.0 Release 2, improves the Release 1 experience, which was based on the IEEE 802.11u standard.

“Through the Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) trials, the WBA has been driving adoption of Hotspot 2.0 technologies in order to make next generation Wi-Fi seamless, secure and interoperable. Enlarging support for online signup services and Windows 10 devices is an important step in making the vision for next generation Wi-Fi a reality,” said Shrikant Shenwai, the CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA). “The WBA encourages the ecosystem (device vendors, infrastructure vendors and operators) to join WBA NGH trials.”

The OSU now provides real-time provisioning for devices and operating systems, including:

– Apple iOS iPhone / iPad (including Mac OSX)
– Samsung Galaxy (S4, S5, S6, Note 3, Note 4)
– Windows 10 (mobile & laptops)
– Android Marshmallow (M) and Nougat (7)
– Hotspot 2.0 Release 1 provisioning
– Hotspot 2.0 Release 2 provisioning

Chris Spencer, chief technology officer, GlobalReach said: “We’re proud to be the first company to reach the scale of OSU device support that we’ve announced today. By enabling full Hotspot 2.0 and Passpoint access, we believe that we’re improving the way that carriers work with Wi-Fi networks, and the service quality that they can give their customers and subscribers.”

GlobalReach Provides Provisioning Power Behind New World Wi-Fi Day Drive to Boost Passpoint Hotspot 2.0 Roaming

GlobalReach Technology is providing the Wi-Fi OSU behind a new Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) programme to increase the number of consumers using Passpoint Hotspot 2.0 by giving them automatic, secure and seamless roaming across city hotspots.

Under the umbrella of the World Wi-Fi Day, New York City, San Francisco, San Jose and Singapore are temporarily setting up a city Wi-Fi roaming service. The free service will allow citizens and visiting carrier customers in the different cities to use the hotspots automatically once they’ve downloaded the Passpoint Hotspot 2.0 profile.

Users simply make a one-time download of the profile from worldwifiday.odyssys.net for seamless roaming across the cities and at all other next generation hotspots in the future.

“Using Next Generation Hotspot and Passpoint technology, the user experience is automatic and secure. It’s a perfect way for wireless service providers to add extra capacity and coverage,” said Tiago Rodrigues, senior director, Wireless Broadband Alliance.

The GlobalReach captive portal and AAA RADIUS platform for service providers features a built-in Hotspot 2.0 OSU as standard. The platform is already used to support some of the largest city Wi-Fi networks including LinkNYC, San Francisco and San Jose. It can support more than a billion authentications a month, across any mobile platform.
